Courage and Strength at its finest...
Jeannie (née Parnes) Wechsler, the youngest of seven children of the family of Samuel and Esther Parnes, was born in a shtetl (a small Jewish town or village in eastern Europe) in eastern Poland named Skalat. Jeannie was almost 4 years old when the war came to their area in 1941. Hitler broke his pact with Stalin and invaded the Russian-controlled part of Poland where Skalat was located.
The entire Parnes family escaped eastward out of Skalat (less than a day before the Nazis would arrive there) by horse and buggy and on foot. A book written about those thousands of Skalat residents who did NOT escape that day was appropriately, but unfortunately, entitled “Death of a Shtetl”. Except for some small bands of residents who survived in the nearby forests, the entire population of Skalat’s Jews were wiped out; some slaughtered quickly, in mass executions, some more slowly worked and/or starved to death in a ghetto and work camps.
During the next 3 ½ months, the Parnes family survived on the road traveling ever eastward, marching together with throngs of other fleeing Jews under frequent bombardment by Hitler’s air force.
The repeated situations in which the members of the Parnes family escaped serious injury and death during this time is hard to believe. Her family’s unlikely survival was memorialized in a book published in 1999, entitled “One Step Ahead” (Avraham Azrieli, author).
When the war ended, the Parnes family spent the next 4 to 5 years in several different Displaced Persons Camps in Germany. From there, they emigrated to Canada and, within a few years, her entire family (parents and 7 siblings) settled in New Jersey within a 15 mile radius of one another in Ocean and Monmouth counties.
Jeanie married Izydor Wechsler and settled in Lakewood, New Jersey with their four children. In the early 1970’s Jeannie, who had a gift for needlework, knitting and knitwear design, started her own business called “The Needlecraft Boutique” which remained open for more than 3 decades. In fact she still helps friends with knitting projects to this day.
Though it can be difficult for her to do so (physically and emotionally), she feels it is her obligation and duty to share her family’s story in public forums when she can.
Such an incredible life story and we are deeply honored to help her share it!
Truly there is nothing more inspiring than women supporting other women in business… especially when they could be considered competitors.
We all know how hard the restaurant industry suffered when Covid hit us but equally hard hit, yet much less talked about is the Travel industry. Travel came to an immediate cease as countries locked down and closed their borders. Trips were cancelled and either refunds were issued or credits held for future. In either case, the agency owners suffered and their employees all laid off without knowing if they’d ever be able to come back. The outlook was bleak from every sector including Airlines, Hotels, Tour companies and the of course the Travel Agencies. They all knew travel would eventually bounce back but what would be the damage before it did?
Now, T.A.'s are not unfamiliar with struggling to bounce back. When online services started popping it was difficult to keep the store front agencies open. So many went out of business then. But there were many who worked diligently to keep their clients coming back. After all you just cannot get the same service from a computer and after a few years, the personal touch has prevailed. Covid however was unchartered territory and had nothing to do with the competition of modern technology. There was nothing to work diligently for as everything and everyone was shutting down and no one would be able to travel. And though (most) landlords were kind to delay the rent payments, those payments would still be due, in full. Places like Long Island NY are known for their astronomical rent… with no money coming in how could they ever catch up?
Meet Donna Guttman of #1 Travel in Merrick NY and Matilde Broder of Power Travel located in Plainview NY. They are just 12 miles from each other and both large agencies. These owners did what most would never do to hold on to not just their business but as many of their employees that they could as well. They took their 2 competing businesses and they joined forces, merging offices to not only split all costs but to support each other as they seek to build back their business, together.
Travel is known to be a tight-knit community where everyone knows everyone in the industry. And what's really nice is everyone respects each other. There has always been a deep-rooted support system within so, although they can be considered competing businesses there has never been a lack of respect for one another. These 2 women, who have known each other for over 15 years, were able draw from each others strengths to merge into one agency, each offering the other what’s needed to sustain their businesses.
“We realized we were much stronger together” said Donna. “Looking ahead we are all very excited. Power has a great team. Combined with the #1 team, it’s a win-win!”
Matilde adds to that, saying “We are excited to announce our joining forces with #1 Travel and welcoming their staff into our office… Power Travel and #1 Travel have been long time friends and we share the same dedication and professionalism to our clients! We look forward to growing together.”
They are now officially #1Power Travel of Plainview. And its already proving to be a success! We wish them all the best! If you want to support women in business, with the upcoming and very welcomed resurgence of travel, this is the perfect way! Go book a trip!

Get Healthy America, Inc. is a family owned business catering to the weight loss and dietary needs of our customers. We provide our customers with high quality distinctive gourmet diet foods that can easily be incorporated into a convenient and enjoyable healthy eating plan.
Get Healthy America was founded by Deborah Cohen aka ” The Diet Lady” in 1990. There were two inspirations for the creation of Get Healthy America, Inc. One came from a simple walk to the bus stop. As Debbie waited with her children for the bus to arrive one morning before school, a not so adorable child called her fat in front of everyone. His exact words were “Boy, your mommy is FAT!” Not only was Debbie embarrassed for herself she was embarrassed for her children as well. As Debbie walked back home from the bus stop with the insult still stinging her heart, she thought to herself “Who does that kid think he is? Her answer, He is right! She was FAT! Well, that was all the motivation Debbie needed to lose the weight she had been struggling with for most of her life.
Debbie, being the foodie she is had set out to find great tasting diet foods, that would support her new healthy lifestyle one meal at a time she told herself. What she found was that the readily available supermarket diet foods were nowhere near the gourmet quality and taste she was after. These diet foods were like eating a shoe topped with cardboard sprinkled with YUCK! In frustration Debbie asked herself the question “Are there any diet foods that taste good in America?” (Ding! Ding! Ding! Inspiration number two). This gave Debbie the idea to fulfill the need for, Healthy Specialty Gourmet Diet Foods that taste good, fit a variety of dietary lifestyles purchased in one place, delivered to your door at affordable prices. Get Healthy America, Inc. was born.

My name is Trish and my sister’s name is Maryann. We are “Two Nutty Sisters”! Technically, we are nutty sisters, but that is also the name of our brittle business.
Maryann was a teacher, who now stays at home to watch her four grandchildren. I was a travel agent until Covid hit. We always wanted a home based business and we both love to cook. During the pandemic, my son asked me if I knew where he could get peanut brittle, since no stores in our area carried it. My sister remembered when her daughter was nine years old she needed a recipe for her Girl Scout troop’s bake contest. She decided they would make our great aunt’s old-fashioned peanut brittle recipe from when she lived down south many years ago. Her daughter’s peanut brittle won first place! My son was thrilled when we decided to make it for him! Well, once he tasted it and other members of the family tasted it, it became totally clear we had something there! So we started experimenting with all different nuts. Aside from peanut, we now make almond, pecan, walnut, and the list goes on. Now everyone has their own favorite!
Once we decided to make it official we needed a name. Our husbands provided that (rather quickly I’ll admit!). Then it was time to apply for all the licensing, permits, and insurance needed to start our business. By July 2020 “Two Nutty Sisters” was founded.
We are now in several farmer’s markets, street festivals, parades and memorials. We donate a percentage of our proceeds to the United States Veterans, Folds of Honor, and other fundraisers. Within a couple of months, we now have repeat customers who order online or by phone if they can’t get to the market.
Our brittle is made with all natural ingredients and is handmade in small batches. It is much different than commercial brittle as it is thin, light and crispy. It is fun to see brittle skeptics faces when they taste a sample! They are always pleasantly surprised and become hooked instantly! As all our customer’s say, “You need to taste it to believe it!”
Yes! The proof is in the tasting as it is as unique as our name!
We offer free pick up, local delivery or low-cost shipping. So next time you’re looking for something new and different give “Two Nutty Sisters” a call, a text or an email. Mention LB50 and take $1.00 off each bag purchased! AND remember....
“It sticks to our nuts, not to your teeth”!
